African-American poet, author, activist, and Harlem Renaissance leader whose best-known works include The Blues Weary, Montage of a Deferred Dream, No Without Laughter, and Black Christmas. He published his masterpiece poem, "The Negro Speaks of the Rivers," in 1921.
He was one of the first jazz poets.
