The Lu learned Confucianism when he was 8 years old. When he was 10 years old, he learned Quoc Ngu script. After his brother died, he returned to Hai Phong to live with his mother.
In Hai Phong, he studied privately with Vu Dinh Quy's father, his first best friend. A short time later, he applied to attend the Bronze Age class of the newly opened French-Vietnamese school (École communale) in Nghè Lane.
In 1924, he passed the elementary school exam (cepfi), then fell ill for a year.
In 1925, he entered Bonnal Primary College in Hai Phong. After studying for 3 years, he dropped out. In 1928, he joined the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Union, working together with Nguyen Van Linh in Hai Phong.
In 1929, he went to Hanoi, passed the entrance exam to the College of Fine Arts Indochina, studied only one then quit again due to dissatisfaction with a professor and the school's principal.
