Northern Irish poet known for his burning gorse, An Exploded View, Man Perched on a Wall, and other works. He has received both the Hawthornden Prize and the T. S. Eliot Prize for a 2000 collection of poems entitled The Weather in Japan.
He received honorary doctorates from Trinity College, Dublin and Queen's University, Belfast.
