In 1939, artist Tam Van passed the CEPCI primary exam, then passed the exam to College De Mytho, which is Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School later. In 1943, he did not pass the Brevet Élémentaire degree, so he dropped out.
He followed his brother, the weird artist Kiet Ba Van to learn to sing. He was given the stage name of Tam Van by his brother, and led the troupe to tour the Northern provinces such as Thai Nguyen, Hanoi, Hai Phong. After only six months of studying classical music and acting, artist Tam Van was able to play beautiful double or double roles in the social dramas of composer Nguyen Thanh Chau.
He has participated in many troupes such as: Quang Lac, Kim Chuong, Thanh Minh Thanh Nga, Da Ly Huong, Phuoc Chung...
In 1944, when the troupe returned to Saigon, artist Tam Van was invited by Hanoi's Quang Lac singing troupe to act as the double lead. The Quang Lac singing troupe did not return to Hanoi but toured the provinces in Thailand, where many Viet Kieu live.
In 1954, the Vietnam-France war ended, artists Tam Van and Bich Chau returned to Vietnam and joined the Nam Chau Viet Drama troupe.

Artist Tam Van married female artist Bich Chau, the lead singer of the Quang Lac singing troupe. The two gave birth to two children.
After leaving the Quang Lac singing troupe, Artist Tam Van and his wife, artist Bich Chau, joined the Kim Chuong singing troupe. But because Bich Chau is a northerner, speaking with a northern accent, he did not receive any tuong roles. Bich Chau was depressed and left to the north, since then he and his wife have been considered broken up.
In 1961, he remarried with an audience who idolized his voice, that was Quan Thi Minh Nguyen. She is a famous composer under the pen name Nhi Kieu.
