An African-American author, filmmaker, and university professor, she is known for her 1999 novel, The Bones Are Not My Child, as well as for the popular short story "The Blues Is." Not No Mocking Bird" (1976). Her other literary works include the collection of short stories, The Sea Birds Are Still Alive (1977) and the 1980 novel, The Salt Eaters
. She studied to have a pantomime at the Ecole de Mime Etienne Decroux in Paris, France.
