Known for her important contributions to the study of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), she made groundbreaking discoveries concerning the structure of the polio and tobacco mosaic virus.
While working as a researcher at Imperial College London, she became the first scientist to use X-ray diffraction to study DNA.

After completing her chemistry studies at Newnham College, Cambridge, she conducted research at the Dolan DNA Learning Center in New York and went on to work for the British Association for the Study of Coal Use.
She grew up in the neighborhood of Notting Hill, London as the daughter of a wealthy Jewish family. Sadly, she died of ovarian cancer in her late thirties.
