'The Black Edison has recorded more than 50 patents to his name in his long career and those trying to make a safer and better public transport system. He was the first African-American to be a mechanical and electronic engineer after the Civil War.
One of the few African-American inventors, he filed several patents, including the Multiplex Telegraph, a device that sent messages between train stations and running trains, but other allies claim ownership of many of them.
