In 2021, when the epidemic became complicated, monk Thich Giac Tam volunteered to join the frontline in fighting the epidemic. At Trinh Yen Tu Pagoda, the Provincial Buddhist Executive Board of Quang Ninh held a ceremony to see off the teacher who left for the South to support epidemic prevention work.

The issue of child rearing is controversial

On the morning of January 13, 2026, the Quang Ninh Department of Health coordinated with the People's Committee of Phong Coc ward to conduct an actual inspection at Cam La pagoda, Phong Coc commune, to verify information reflecting the raising of children at this religious facility.

The Department of Health of Quang Ninh province organized two working groups to work with the People's Committee of Phong Coc ward and Cam La pagoda, determining that the pagoda is only a religious facility and relic, not a social assistance facility and has not been licensed to care and nurture children. The fact that the temple itself receives, cares for, and nurtures children does not comply with the law.

At the time of inspection, Cam La Pagoda had 11 children being directly cared for by the abbot, Venerable Thich Giac Tam. Of these, 3 children were adopted by the monks according to the law.

Therefore, the Department of Health requests Venerable Thich Giac Tam to hand over the number of unadopted children to their families as soon as possible. For children who have not been handed over to their families, the People's Committee of Phong Coc ward is responsible for carrying out procedures to bring them to the Quang Ninh Social Assistance Center.

The Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Quang Ninh province has issued a document correcting the Venerable Thich Giac Tam, Abbot of Cam La Pagoda, receiving and taking care of a number of children and treating diseases at the pagoda without ensuring legal procedures.

In the face of the noise, Venerable spoke up: Among the children raised at the temple, there are 4 children who have completed adoption procedures. The children are all in difficult and difficult circumstances, their parents are separated. To raise children, the temple has asked for permission from the local government. The teacher added: "The local government has inspected all activities of the temple. Whatever is wrong will be dealt with, but I think I am not wrong. Anyone who becomes a monk and sees people suffering will support the Dharma".
