An American novelist and short story writer, he is known for such short stories as "The Enormous Radio," "Goodbye, My Brother," and "The Five-Forty-eight." His novels include including Bullet Park (1969), Falconer (1977), and National Book Award-winning work, The Wapshot Chronicle (1957).
He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. His short story collection, The Stories of John Cheever, received both, in 1981, the National Book Award and the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
