Dang Thai Son's talent was discovered by pianist Isaac Katz. In 1976, he studied at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow under the tutelage of Vladimir Natanson and Dmitry Alexandrovitch Bashkirov. In 1983, he graduated from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Immediately, he was invited to teach at the Kunitachi Conservatory in Tokyo-Japan.
In 1991, Dang Thai Son moved to Montreal, Canada to settle and teach at the University of Montréal.
At the Gala to celebrate Chopin's 200th birthday in March 2010, Dang Thai Son was one of three global artists honored to be selected to perform.
