Soviet poet, anti-fascist fighter, and 1957 Lenin Prize recipient for literature. His most famous works include the Moabit Notebook and The Postman.
His Nazi resistance activities resulted in life imprisonment and execution by the Gestapo. For his courage and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union.
