Democratic Party politician and 42nd Controller of New York City. After serving two terms as Controller (2002-2009), he launched two unsuccessful campaigns (in 2009 and in 2013) for the offices of the mayor of New York City.
During the late 1990s, while holding many New York City political offices he also held a position of executive for the natural gas company Keyspan Energy.

He grew up in Brooklyn, New York as New York Congressman William C. Thompson, Sr. and New York City Catholic Elaine Thompson. His marriage to Elsie McCabe Thompson resulted in a daughter named Jennifer.
