Mickey Leland was an anti-poverty activist who later became the 18th congressman of Texas and sat in the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. He is a Democrat.
In 1972, for the first time, the United States House of Representatives allowed members of a district to participate in elections to the Senate. After this decision was announced, there were 5 candidates of ethnic minorities participating, including Mickey Leland, running for the Texas Senate seat and Leland was the winner. In 1974 and 1976 he was re-elected to this position, serving for 3 terms in the Texas House of Representatives. He became famous for his activities to call for, claim for rights, and provide health care for poor people in the state of Texas. He is also responsible for passing a law so that low-income people here can buy generic drugs at a cheap price. He also supports the creation of the right to health care for the poor through Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO's). To accomplish his goals in Austin, Mickey Leland has worked with entities such as the Texas State Labor Committee, Human Resources Committee, State Affairs Committee, Legislative Council, and other occupational and safety subcommittees labor in industry. He was later elected vice chair of the Joint Committee on Prison Reform, becoming the first African-American to serve on the Senate-House Committee as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
Date On August 7, 1989, politician Mickey Leland was killed in a plane crash in Gambela, Ethiopia. In this accident, all 15 people died, including him. After his death, a number of buildings and initiatives were renamed to his name, in honor of his contributions to the people and country of the United States.
