His first trumpet was a gift from the Anti-apartheid Chaplain St. Peter of Archbishop Trevor Huddleston. He was in the orchestra for "King Kong", the first stage musical to experience widespread success in South Africa.
He was previously married to Grammy Award-winning singer Miriam Makeba. He is the father of the television show Sal Masekela.
