At the age of 15, he followed his two older brothers, Nguyen Dinh Thu and Nguyen Dinh Tha, to escape to the Viet Minh-controlled area to join the army. Duy Khanh was assigned to teach by the unit, and then worked as a war correspondent for the Army Radio program. He was active on the battlefield, present in most of the big battlefields.
