Known best for her contributions to the historical fiction series Dear America, she also wrote part of the Royal Diaries Scholastic Press series. Between 1990 and 1995, she received three Scott King Awards Coretta and was a finalist for the prestigious Newbery Medal.
She has written several personal childhood memoirs, including The Dark Thirty and Somewhere Special.
