She attended Trinity College, Dublin. She published her first poetic work, 23 poems, in 1962. Her first full-length volume, New Territories, was published five years later.
The daughter of an Irish diplomat who served as the British Ambassador, she spent a large part of her childhood in London. She married Kevin Casey in 1969 and has since raised two children.
