Soviet dictator who ruthlessly enforced communism in the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953. He executed many of his former party members including Leon Trotsky in a major purge in 1930 and he sent goods million of his people went to labor camps known as the Gulags prison camps.
Under his leadership, the Soviet Union became the second world power with nuclear weapons, and entered the cold war against the United States.
