He pursued comedy at the urging of his commanding officer in the army, where he won a number of military talent shows. He later performed as a comedian in small, mostly black-patroned nightclubs while working for the United States Postal Service during daylight hours. His first television appearance was at the end of The Tonight Show Starring Jack Paar.
He married Lillian Smith in 1959 and they had ten children together. He has been criticized as an absentee father.
