In 1956, musician Huu Mai participated in the founding and editing of Military Arts magazine, head of the Military Arts Department, up to the rank of Colonel.

He died on June 17, 2007 in Hanoi, at the age of 81.

During the national resistance war, he participated in the self-defense of the citadel, fought in Hanoi, then joined the army, was in charge of Quan Tien Phong newspaper (the newspaper of the 308th Battalion), participated in many campaigns including the Dien Bien Phu campaign.
Huu Mai was born into a family of small officials. He married his wife, Truong Thi Bich Thu, born in 1933, the couple had 4 children. Huu Viet's son is also a writer.
