Best known for her 1979 work Black Macho and the occult of Superwoman, this feminist article and African-American author has also written for her magazines, Newsweek and The Village Voice. Her essays include "Michael Jackson, the Great Black, and 'The Ecstasy of the Media' and "Anger in Isolation: Finding A Feminist Black for the Sisterhood"

She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in literature from the City University of New York and a PhD in film studies from New York University. Later, she taught English at both universities.
Her mother, Faith Ringgold, is a renowned artist, art teacher, and Children's book writer; Her father, Robert Earl Wallace, had a career as a musician. She was married to Eugene Nesmith from 1989 until 2001.
