Who is Poet Huu Loan?
Poet Huu Loan, whose real name is Nguyen Huu Loan, is the author of the famous poem "Purple myrtle flower". This poem was written by composers Dung Chinh, Pham Duy, Anh Bang popular music. In October 2004, Purple Myrtle was purchased by Viet Technology Joint Stock Company (abbreviated: ViTek VTB) for 100 million VND.
On March 18, 2010, poet Huu Loan passed away at the age of 95. His body was buried in his hometown.
During his writing career, he wrote about 60 poems. However, his works have not yet been printed.

Poet Huu Loan studied in Thanh Hoa, then taught, and in 1936 joined the Binh Front. He joined the Viet Minh in Thanh Hoa town (now Thanh Hoa city).
In 1943, he returned to build the Viet Minh movement in his hometown Thanh Hoa. When the August Revolution broke out, he served as Vice Chairman of the Nga Son District Uprising Committee.
Before 1945, poet Huu Loan was a collaborator on literary journals, published in Hanoi.
After the August Revolution, he was appointed as Culture Commissioner in the Provisional Administrative Committee Thanh Hoa province, in charge of companies: Education, Information, Trade and Justice of the province.
During the resistance war against the French, Huu Loan joined the Vietnamese People's Army, serving in the 304th Battalion.
After 1954, he worked at Van Nghe Newspaper for a time. During the period of 1956-1957, he joined the Movement of Humanity-Grade Pham advocated by writer Phan Khoi.
After the Humanitarian Giai Phong movement was extinguished in 1958, the poet Huu Loan had to go to a re-education camp for a few years, then was kept under house arrest in the locality. At the end of his life, he returned to live in his hometown.

Huu Loan has two wives, the first wife is Mrs. Le Do Thi Ninh. Huu Loan knew Mrs. Ninh when he was at Dao Duy Tu college, Thanh Hoa. He tutored Ms. Ninh's older brothers and later Ms. Ninh.
May 1949, Mrs. Ninh died (by drowning) at the age of 16. This is also the time when the poem "Purple myrtle flower" was born.
Then he married Mrs. Pham Thi Nhu, a farmer, the poem Hoa Rice (1955) was written for this second wife.
