Who is Professor Tran Van Khe?
Professor Tran Van Khe is well known in the field of Vietnamese traditional music and culture research. He was the first Vietnamese to obtain a doctorate in musicology in France. He was a professor at the Sorbonne University in France and is also an honorary member of the International Music Council, UNESCO.
In 1940-1941, Professor Tran Van Khe passed the first baccalaureate and was the second valedictorian of the High School Truong Vinh Ky . Also during this time, he and musician Luu Huu Phuoc and Vo Van Quan founded the orchestra of school, and the Scola Club Orchestra of the school's student association SAMIPIC. And he was the conductor of those two orchestras.
While studying Medicine in Hanoi, Tran Van Khe was trusted to be the conductor for the school's orchestra. The Orchestra often performs and introduces songs by musician Luu Huu Phuoc.
From 1949, he went to France to study abroad and passed the entrance exam to the School of Politics, Faculty of International Trade in 1951. In 1958, he studied music science and worked on his doctoral thesis under the guidance of Professors Jacques Chailley , Emile Gaspardone and André Schaeffner.
Professor Tran Van Khe passed the Doctorate of Literature in Musicology at the Sorbonne University in June 1958 with the thesis "LaMusique vietnamienne traditionnelle" (Vietnamese traditional music) ).
Since 1963, he has been teaching at the Center for Oriental Music Studies, under the auspices of the Institut de Musicologie de Paris.
In 2006, he returned to Vietnam to settle down and continue his career of researching and teaching ethnic music in Vietnam. During his teaching career, he has traveled to 67 countries around the world to talk and teach about Vietnamese folk music.
