As a child, poet Huy Du followed his father to Hanoi, where he studied in Hanoi. There, he began to study music and violin. He and musician Phong Nha and other friends formed a band to perform at To Nhu theater every night.
Poet Huy Du taught at the Inter-Region III Cavalry School from 1947-1949. Since 1949, he has been the head of the Van Cong delegation of the Inter-regional Command III.
In 1949, he was the head of the literary division of the III Inter-Region Command and then the head of the 320th Division's literary delegation (in 1951).
From 1956 - 1962, he studied at the Beijing Conservatory of Music, China. In 1962, he returned to his country to work at the General Department of Politics' Dance and Dance Troupe (Vietnam People's Army) until 1977.
