Molecular bioligist who won the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work out methods to determine the sequence of nucleotides in a nucleic acid. In 1986, he proposed the RNA world hypothesis for the origin of life, based on a concept first proposed by Carl Woese in 1967.
He was made a foreign member of the Royal Society. London in 1987 after winning the American Steel Foundation Award from the Academy of Sciences in 1968.
